Finding the right Bay Area maternity locations — and the best spots for family sessions — is one of the most personal decisions in planning your shoot. The backdrop should feel like you — the way your family actually lives, moves, and laughs. As a Bay Area lifestyle photographer, I’ve spent a lot of time exploring this region with a camera in hand, and I keep coming back to the same spots again and again. Here’s why.
The Coast: Stunning Bay Area Maternity Locations by the Sea
The Northern California coastline has a quality of light that I find endlessly beautiful — soft, diffused, and completely unpredictable in the best way.

Half Moon Bay is one of my most-reached-for locations. The beaches here are often wrapped in morning fog or soft cloud cover, which creates a natural softbox effect that flatters every skin tone and age. No harsh shadows, no squinting into the sun. Just gentle, even light and the sound of waves. My insider tip: don’t be discouraged by a cloudy forecast — overcast days here are often the most magical ones.

Moss Beach and the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve offer something a little wilder — dramatic rock formations, tide pools, and a raw coastal atmosphere that photographs like a dream. The mood is romantic and adventurous. Golden hour before sunset is ideal, and I always remind families to bring extra layers because the coast has its own weather.

Rodeo Beach in the Marin Headlands is another favorite, with its unique dark pebbled shore and sweeping cliffs. The dramatic coastline and rugged rock formations create a wild, cinematic atmosphere that’s unlike anything else in the Bay Area. It feels timeless and a little moody — perfect for families who want something bold and different from a typical beach session.
The Redwoods: Quiet, Towering, and Completely Alive
There’s a particular stillness inside a redwood forest that I love. The light filters through the canopy in long, soft beams, and everything feels slower and more intentional.

Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park near Santa Cruz is one of the most stunning places I’ve photographed in the Bay Area. Ancient trees, dappled light, soft ground covered in ferns — it creates an atmosphere that’s peaceful and a little otherworldly. Sessions here feel intimate and grounded. It’s about a 40-minute drive from San Jose, which makes it very manageable.

Joaquin Miller Park in Oakland brings that same forest energy closer to the East Bay. The tall eucalyptus and redwoods create beautiful vertical lines and filtered light. Even without fog, the canopy creates a naturally soft, even quality of light that works beautifully for portraits.

Redwood Grove Nature Preserve in Los Altos is one of my most-visited spots for a reason. It’s compact but surprisingly varied — within just a short walk you get towering redwoods, soft filtered light, and several different backdrops that give a session real variety without anyone getting tired. Street parking is easy, and the path to the grove is stroller-friendly, which makes it a natural choice for families with little ones or newborns. I often use this location for mini sessions, and it never disappoints. It has that quiet, tucked-away feeling that makes you forget you’re in the middle of the suburbs.
Gardens: Color, Structure, and Seasonal Beauty
When families want something lush and romantic, gardens never disappoint. These are some of my favorite Bay Area maternity locations for clients who want color and romance.

The Municipal Rose Garden in San Jose is a true local treasure. From mid-April through late summer — and often into October — the rows of roses are in full bloom, creating a backdrop that’s classic, colorful, and full of warmth. Late afternoon light streaming through the petals adds a golden softness I love. I recommend early evenings on weekdays to avoid the busiest times.

Villa Montalvo in Saratoga brings a completely different energy — Mediterranean architecture, manicured lawns, and an elegant, European atmosphere. The warm light on the villa walls in late afternoon is something I always look forward to. Just check ahead for any permit or reservation requirements before your session.

Elizabeth F. Gamble Garden in Palo Alto is a quiet, intimate gem that often gets overlooked — and that’s exactly what makes it special. This historic garden features a wisteria-draped pergola, a rose garden, and beautifully maintained grounds that feel personal and unhurried. The scale is smaller than Filoli, which actually works in our favor — it creates a cozy, enclosed atmosphere perfect for maternity and family portraits. Best of all, admission is free. Late spring when the wisteria is in bloom is absolutely magical, but the garden photographs beautifully year-round.
Filoli: Where Every Season Has Its Own Magic

Filoli Historic House and Garden in Woodside deserves its own mention. This place is genuinely special — formal gardens that bloom in layers throughout the seasons, grand architecture, open lawns, and an atmosphere that feels both timeless and alive. I’ve photographed maternity sessions here surrounded by tulips in spring and family sessions among the roses in summer, and every time the results are extraordinary. Entry requires a ticket, and I’m happy to share — admission is included as my gift to every client who chooses Filoli for their session.
Peaceful Nature: Water and Open Sky

Boronda Lake in the South Bay offers a quieter, more contemplative setting — soft reflections on still water, mature trees, and open grassy areas. Golden hour light reflecting off the water is especially flattering. It’s easy to access and great for families with young children who need room to move.

How to Choose What’s Right for You
Every family is different, and the best location is the one that matches the feeling you want to carry with you. Coastal spots bring drama and openness. The redwoods offer intimacy and quiet. Gardens give you color and romance. Each has its own light, its own rhythm, its own mood. Whether you’re drawn to the coast or the redwoods, there are Bay Area maternity locations to suit every vision and personality.
When you book a session with me, I send every client a curated location guide with maps, example galleries, and seasonal notes. We look at it together and find the spot that fits your vision — or if nothing feels quite right, I’m always happy to scout something new. You can learn more about what’s included in each session on my Services page.
Newborn sessions book 4–6 weeks in advance, and family sessions fill up quickly during peak seasons (spring and fall). Reach out early to hold your date.
Your story deserves a backdrop as beautiful as the people in it. Let’s find it together.
